Kenyan athletes in Korea for Dream Program Scholarship

Kenyan athletes selected for a training scholarship in the Republic of Korea ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics have arrived in Pyeongchang on Monday for the program slated to run from January 6-18.

The program dubbed ‘Dream Program’ seeks to nurture and mentor young Winter sports talents who can represent the country in Winter sports in the future.

Chebet Njeri Koech (12), Chumbana Likiza Muhusini (15) and Hassnein Ali Shah (13), were awarded full scholarship to attend the program through a competitive process in November 2019.

The trio has been accompanied by a roller-skating coach Asa Nyariki and Daniel Safari – a beneficiary of the program who was selected as a mentor.

The 27-year-old Safari now a professional Alpine Skier training in Utah, USA is also in line to become the first Paralympic Skier to represent Kenya at the Winter Games penciled for Beijing, China.

According to National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) acting Secretary General Francis Mutuku, NOCK will be striving to avail similar opportunities to Kenya’s sportsmen and women.

“We will be rolling out more similar programs throughout the year towards building the country’s capacity and diversity in future Games,” said Mutuku.

The program will include an elaborate training camp in; Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Cross-Country Skiing, Bobsled, Short Track, Speed Skating and Figure Skating. It will also include cultural exchange programs and site visits.

The program is also major boost as Kenya seeks to venture into the Winter Games with Sabrina Simader being the only Kenya that took part at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games also held in Pyeongchang.
