Kenyan boxing medalists to fight African rivals

The Boxing Association of Kenya hopes to raise KSh50 million when it stages bouts between Kenyan medalists and their rivals who shone in the African Confederation (AFCB) Boxing championships in Congo Brazzaville.
Kenya is set to host 2017 African Boxing Championships rematch scheduled for November this year.
The competition  will involve Kenyan boxers against their rivals during the 2017 African Confederation Boxing Championship (AFCB) which was held in Congo Brazzaville June this year.
Speaking to Citizen Digital on Tuesday, Kenyan Boxing Association chairman John Kameta noted the competition will be the first of its kind to be hosted in the country after a long time.
“The action will be held at KICC , the main aim being to raising funds to enable the federation to pay boxers prudently. We are going to have a beautiful and interesting boxing show in Kenya.
“This is one way of restoring the glory the sport enjoyed in the past,” told Kameta, calling on Kenyans to turn out in large numbers and motivate the boxers.
The event will also include the young emerging boxers, who according to Kameta, are the prospects for the 2020 International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Boxing Championships.
After enduring a difficult period this year in financing boxing activities, the association chairman wants to strategise early on modalities raising funds for 2018 activities.
“We want to step into 2018 with confidence and with a deep pocket to ensure we run our events smoothly. I am sure with such measures in place we can change the face of the sport in the country,” concluded Kameta.
Among the stars expected to light up the action will be all AFCB medalists , including bronze medalist John Kyalo (Midle Weight) and Shafy Bakari (Light Flyweight), gold medalist Nick Okoth (Light Weight) and Reda Benbaziz from Algeria.
Christine Ongare (middle weight) and Elizabeth Akinyi will also be in action in the women category.
