Kenyan international Olunga joins CSL side Guizhou Zhicheng

Kenyan international Michael Olunga has completed a move to newly promoted Chinese Super League side Guizhou Zhicheng after an impressive debut season at Swedish top division side IF Djurgarden.

Earlier this week, it was reported Olunga – who in his first season in Swedish top flight made the team of the season – had attracted interest from Russian giants CSKA Moscow yet it is Zhicheng that made tangible their interest.

The lanky striker left record Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia for Sweden in 2015 on a four-year deal where he endured a mini-goal drought in his first half of the season before flourishing in the second as he went on to score 12 goals.

According to Swedish media, Olunga’s transfer is Djugarden’s most expensive ever after the Chinese moneybags offered ‘an irresistible package’ – worth an estimated KSh 450m – for the player nicknamed Engineer.

Other than CSKA Moscow, Spanish side Real Mallorca and Turkish side FC Galatasary are among the teams belived to have shown interest Olunga.

Olunga’s exploits in front of goal helped Djugarden to a seventh-place league finish, making him the gem branded ‘not for sale’ by management of the Stockholm-based club.

The 2015 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Most Valuable Player joins Dutch International Tjarron Chery, signed from English championship side Queens Park Rangers and Egyptian Ali Ghazal, roped in from Egypt’s CD Nacional.
