Kenyan Jerono banned for eight years over doping

Kenyan long-distance runner Salome Jerono Biwott has been banned for eight years after she was found guilty of committing a second doping violation by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

Jerono’s urine collected in April during the 2019 São Paulo International Marathon tested positive for Norandrosterone, a banned substance by the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA).

The 36-year-old served a two-year period of ineligibility in 2012 after traces of the same anabolic steroid Norandrosterone were found a urine sample she provided at the Standard Chartered Marathon in Nairobi.

She failed to respond to the charge that would require her to either accept an eight-year period of ineligibility, or request a hearing before the Disciplinary Tribunal, by the given deadline of July 4.

A statement published by the AIU on Thursday read:

“In accordance with Article 8.45 ADR, the Athlete is deemed, to have admitted the Anti-Doping Rule Violations and to have acceded to the Consequences specified in the Notice of Charge.

“On the basis that the Athlete is deemed to have admitted the Anti-Doping Rule Violations specified above, the AIU confirms by this decision the following Consequences in her case:

13.1 a period of Ineligibility of eight (8) years pursuant commencing on 5 June 2019 for the Athlete’s second violation of the ADR; and

13.2. disqualification of the Athlete’s results since 7 April 2019 with all resulting consequences including the forfeiture of any titles, awards, medals, points and prize and appearance money.

Among the other Kenyans runners suspended for anti-doping offenses are World Championships 800 metres bronze medallist Kipyegon Bett, and three-time Boston Marathon champion Rita Jeptoo.

Other are Rio 2016 marathon champion Jemima Sumgong, Asbel Kiprop who is serving a four-year ban, and World half-marathon record holder Abraham Kiptum who received a provisional suspension in April for athlete biological passport violation.
