Kenyan junior team aims for glory in Algiers

Kenya’s junior hockey team manager Michael Malungu believes the national men youth team will post impressive performance at the African Youth Games that began in Algiers, Algeria on Wednesday.

Kenya will launch her quest for the title on Thursday against Zambia, before taking on Nigeria on Friday in the two-week event that runs from July 18-28 and Mlaungu is confident that the team will do well.

Kenya’s last group match will be against neighbour Uganda on Saturday.

With a ticket to the World Championship set for Argentina in October on the cards, Kenya will have to tremendously improve if they are to claim the ticket, let alone get out of the group.

The Kevin Lugalia coached squad o flew out on Sunday ahead of the competition.

“Our objective is to qualify for World Championship; we are going for a win. The boys are ready because we have had intense training for the last two months at Musigu training camp in Nairobi,”Malungu charged.

The Kenyan team is in Pool ‘B’ which together with Zambia, Nigeria and Uganda. Pool ‘A’ will feature hosts Algeria, South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. The hosts will battle Zimbabwe, as South Africa face off with Namibia tomorrow in Pool ‘A’. Nigeria will square it out with Uganda in Pool ‘B’ second match.
