Kenyans Push for Resignation of FKF Boss Sam Nyamweya

Kenyans are calling for the resignation of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Sam Nyamweya over alleged mismanagement of football.

The reactions posted on Twitter and Facebook were triggered by the unexpected announcement by FIFA President Sepp Blatter that he will step down from the football governing body’s top seat.

Since his first appearance as a trending topic on Tuesday evening, Sam Nyamweya has been trending for more than 16 hours by the time of going to press.

Some Kenyans on Twitter, however, supported the embattled FKF President saying he is not to blame for the turbulence in Kenyan football.

Robert @Robert_Lunalo: The problem is bigger than the individual that is Sam Nyamweya. Corruption, incompetence, politics etc. Resigning won’t end it.

Nyamweya suspends other officials

Nyamweya’s reign at the helm of Kenyan football has been marred by controversy with several football stakeholders calling for the disbandment of FKF over mismanagement of the country’s football.

Leadership wrangles have also put FKF and league body Kenya Premier League (KPL) at loggerheads leading to formation of two parallel leagues – FKF Premier League and Kenya Premier league this season.

In February this year, Sports, Arts and Culture Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario threatened to disband FKF and form a body to run the country’s football after both FKF and KPL failed to agree on one league.

FKF has, until recently also been part of a court case where former FKF Vice President Sammy Shollei and other former officials, suspended by Nyamweya, filed a case against him pointing at misappropriation of funds and massive corruption at the football body.  The two have since withdrawn their case.

Nyamweya was elected FKF president in 2011 garnering a total of 1,461 votes against his opponent Hussein Mohammed who got 1,198 votes.

The next FKF elections are set to be held later this year.
