Kenya’s athletic stars feted

World Javelin champion Julius Yego is the Male athlete of the year for his exploits in the 2015 season.

Yego won the coveted title managing to edge a stellar line up of nominees that included Ezekiel Kemboi, the steeplechase and Olympic champion, David Rudisha, Asbel Kiprop, Geoffrey Kamworor and Nicholas Bett, athletes who have placed Kenya on the athletics world map in 2015.

The self made athlete, better known as “Mr Youtube” broke the national record four times made history for Kenya in the field event.

“It’s a big big thank you to you guys, I want to appreciate you without my competitors, I wouldn’t be here , 2015 has been a good year,” Yego acknowledged Thursday 10th December at the Athletics Gala at the Safari Park Hotel.

The pocket rocket, Vivian Cheruiyot clinched the Women’s title beating a similar star-studded list of nominees that included Berlin Marathon Champion Gladys Cherono, World cross country queen Agnes Jebet, steeplechase World champion Hyvin Kiyeng, marathon silver medalist Hela Kiprop and 800M former World champion Eunice sum.

The long distance award went to Eliud Kipchoge whose transition from the track to the Marathon has been a remarkable one. Cherono secured the Women’s title. Nicholas Bett’s gold-winning performance at the World athletics championships in Berlin in China this year fit the criterion for the Sprinter of the year title. David Rudisha who has had mixed fortunes in the past 2 seasons won the Come back Athlete of the year title.

Kumari Taki, the World youth and Commonwealth Youth champion was crowned the young athlete of the year.
