Kenyas fate on hosting CHAN to be decided August

Visiting CAF officials have issued a three months ultimatum for Kenya to improve the stadia to host CHAN or the tournament will be taken to another country with better stadia.

The CAF officials issued a statement saying that the country will be ready for the showpiece come January next year, but only if Kenya puts its house in order.

The visiting CAF delegation led by Vice President Selemani Omari revealed on Saturday they will make a final decision on whether Kenya will host the event on August 20th.

“We will come back again in August and we hope everything will have improved. Otherwise, Kenya will miss the rights to host the tournament if nothing will have changed by then,” CAF Vice president Selemani Omari said.

The CAF officials who were on a tour of the stadia that will host the tourney said that they are worried on the slow progress of work at the Kenyatta and Kip Keino stadium.

According to CAF officials they are impressed with progress but there is still work to be done on infrastructure to enable smooth flow of operations. This was lauded by Sports Cabinet Secretary DR. Hassan Wario who hosted the Officials in Kasarani.

Four stadiums including Kasarani and Nyayo in Nairobi, Kinoru in Meru and Kenyatta stadium in Machakos are under inspection as the Ministry of Sports awards contracts for work to commence. Work in Nyayo stadium is set to begin in two weeks’ time in a bid to speed up preparations.

If the stadium works are completed in time, Kenya will become only the fifth country to host the 16-team championships come January 2018.
