Kenyas Kabaddi team relishing Iraqi test

Kenya’s Kabaddi team captain David Shilisia Musambayi believes that his side is ready for the invitational tournament that will hosted at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The thee day event runs from December 14-16 and Kenya hopes to showcase its mettle when it goes arm- for- arm with some of the world’s best.

According to Musambayi, the tournament is important for Kenya as it prepares to defend their continental title next February at the same venue as well as qualify for the 2019 World Cup in India.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on Monday during their training session at Kasarani, Musambayi singled out Iraq as their biggest threat owing to the guest’s vast experience and strong defence.

“We are going to play our own game despite their advances; our main purpose is to win at home as we check on what we need to improve before next year’s assignments. This tournament is also important to the players as they hope to be scouted for top tier leagues worldwide. If they play well here is it will give them an advantage when they go for test matches,”  Musambayi who plays for the Indian pro Kabaddi team Haryana Steelers, said.

Musambayi who was a former guard, added that the team has been working on its defence which is crucial to raiding and tackling, to ensure that they can maximize on total points gathered.

Kenya will take advantage as the host to field a total of five teams; three senior men teams, a female team and the boys Under -19 team which will be spearheaded by Duncan Odhiambo in their international debut against Iraq.

Head coach Laventa Oguta stressed out that they will be fielding a large number of players to give them exposure, considering that the sports is about two years old in Kenya.
