Kenyas Morans ready for Afrobasket opener with Senegal

Kenya men’s basketball team assistant head coach Sadat Gaya says the team is ready for the last round of the 2021 FIBA Afrobasket championship qualifiers in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

Morans will face Senegal for the opening match on Friday, a team that defeated them in the first leg of qualifiers that was held in Kigali, Rwanda in November 2020.

Gaya says they have learned from their mistakes and that Senegal should be ready for a surprise.

“We have studied film, watched the mistakes we made against them, now what is left is executing our game plan. I believe in our players and we are ready to give favorable results,” Gaya said.

Gaya added that the team is in good spirits and there are no reported injuries and that they are ready for the game.

The team is under new head coach Mills Liz from Australia who took over from Cliff Owuor who is in Rwanda.

The team received a major boost with the arrival of four foreign-based players which is a massive boost ahead of Friday’s tip off of the third and final round of the Afrobasket qualifiers.

The quartet of Tylor Okari, Ariel Okal, Joel Awich and Preston Bungei joined the Morans camp in Yaoundé Tuesday and Gaya is brimming with confidence Kenya will post a good show and progress to the Africa’s premier basketball festival set for Rwanda from August 24 to September 5.

Morans who are in group ‘B’ alongside Mozambique, Angola and Senegal play their first match against Senegal on Friday before facing Angola on Saturday and then wind up their campaign against Mozambique Sunday.

Kenya lies third in the group following the first round of qualifiers and can clinch a place in the African finals by matching the results of fourth-placed Mozambique. The top three teams from the five groups will qualify for the continental showpiece as will, the best fourth-placed team
