Kenya’s Morans shock Angola to qualify for Afrobasket

Tylor Ongwae produced the clutch shot as Kenya pulled off a shock 74-73 win over 11-time African champions Angola to qualify for the 2021 Afrobasket Championship Finals set for Kigali, Rwanda.

The historic victory on Friday night in Yaounde guaranteed that Kenya cannot finish below third place in Group B of the qualifiers, just enough to secure a ticket to Africa’s biggest basketball festival for the first time in 28 years.

Prior to the Saturday win Kenya had recorded a defeat of 69-51 against five-time champions Senegal on Friday.

Only the top three teams from the qualification journey after the second leg qualifies for the Afrobasket Championship.

And at the City Arena, Morans recorded a 9-22 loss in the first quarter before winning 19-17 in the second quarter going to halftime trailing 28-39.

After the break, Morans came out more energized as they won the third quarter 25-17 before dominating in the final bend to win 21-17.

Denmark-based Ongwae showed his master class scoring freely to help the Morans, netting in 16 baskets while Angola’s Alexandre Jungo had 19.

In the first round that was held in Kigali, Rwanda in November 2020, Angola defeated Kenya 83-66

Morans under new head coach Lizz Mills from Australia will now be facing Mozambique on Sunday in their final match as they start preparations for the continental stage assignment.
