Kenya’s Olympic champion Rudisha in mourning
Two-time Olympic champion David Rudisha is bereaved. Rudisha, 28, who won gold in 800m at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games lost his younger sister, Harriet Rudisha to lung cancer on Saturday.
“It’s sad to announce the loss of my younger sister Harriet Rudisha from lung cancer, the funeral is scheduled for Monday 4th Dec, 2017, at our home in Kilgoris town. Thank you,” the Olympic champion wrote in closed WhatsApp group.
The Kilgoris born athlete who also won gold medals at the World Championships in Daegu(2011) and in Beijing(2015) has of late taken a low profile.
“She began feeling unwell in 2014 when she was diagnosed with TB, it became worse this year when we took her for more check up at Coptic Hospital in Nairobi and that’s when she was diagnosed with cancer that had unfortunately reached stage four,” Rudisha told Citizen Digital in an interview.
“She underwent treatment and was discharged after some time. Three days ago she appeared very relaxed, watched TV, and then went to sleep .Its like she had an attack during the night and unfortunately passed on.As a family we are sad to have lost a loved one but we are preparing for her burial that will take place on Monday,”Rudisha added.
Two time World Cross Country and two time World Half Marathon Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor was among the first athletes to pass their message of condolences.
