Kerr: For me chapati, matumbo and omena are irresistible delicacies

Two days after leading Gor Mahia to a record 16th Kenyan Premier League title, British coach Dylan Kerr is bracing Nairobi’s morning chilly weather waiting to be served at a food kiosk along Dennis Pritt Road in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.

He is dressed casually; donning a faded blue jeans and white T-shirt.

Though every passersby greets him with blank stares unable to fathom how a British coach with a high flying job would opt to have a humble breakfast in an open kiosk, he’s unfazed. In fact he is so much at home and loving the moment.

Citizen Digital writer John Kyanda caught up with him.

CD: Coach, what brings you here?

Kerr:  Chapati and nyama, I love chapati so much that I have to pass by at least three times a week. I love their food; it’s very fresh and yummy.

CD: Is this the only place (kibanda) from where you eat?

Kerr: No! No! This is just one of the many food kiosks that I frequent. There is one at Yaya centre, another, next to Safaricom headquarters along Waiyaki Way, and after training sessions, there is another favourite joint round Camp Toyoyo.

CD: Apart from chapati what else do you eat at the kiosks?

Kerr: Ugali and matumbo…it’s fresh and well cooked .You can’t compare that to what people eat in some of these big hotels.

CD: That’s interesting

Kerr: Don’t forget the small fish (referring to omena) and ugali .Oh, my God! Wonderful meals that I have fallen in love with. What are you having?

CD: Chapati choma..

Kerr: What’s that?

CG: Its chapati cut in small pieces mixed with some meat soup and vegetables.

Kerr: It looks yummy, I need some. (He puts an order). Mum, please bring me some. I like the way they serve, these people are very respectful.

CD: What do you do in your free time?

Kerr: I watch football, read about it, plus eat some nyama choma at Road House (a popular food joint in Kilimani ) while playing pool.

CD: Which EPL team do you support?

Kerr: Manchester United. In fact I’m planning to visit Man City’s training ground while on holiday to learn some football because every day is a learning process.

CD: Is that the only place you will visit?

Kerr: No, I will go to Reading. Jaap Stam is currently in charge. I will also visit Celtic and if time allows watch the much awaited Manchester derby.

CD: Do you go out?

Kerr: Yes, when I am free I do. Club Mojos, Tribeka, Space, Romours, Edge are some of the places I have visited.

CD: What do you like about these entertainment joints?

Kerr: The music and the respect people accord each another.

CD: You came saw and concurred in your first season. Which is the toughest team you ever faced?

Kerr: Posta Rangers was an eye opener to me.It showed me what I should expect in the league.

CD: Going forward what should we expect from you?

Kerr: Defend the title. If possible, finish unbeaten. Keep the squad intact, add quality to the side and go as far as we can in next year’s Caf-Champions League.
