Kerugoya held by Jumbo as Kirinyaga league starts

Kerugoya Sportiff and Jumbo T played to a 1-1 draw in one of the 10 opening clashes of the inaugural Kirinyaga County football league that will involve 160 teams from the region.

Kelvin Kameri fired Kerugoya to the lead in the 29th minute of the opening period before Anthony Mathenge leveled matters in the 65th for the final score.

The aim of the competition is to select the men and women squads that will represent Kirinyaga in the inter-counties or any other competition.

“We want to engage youth in showcasing their talents and also to make them busy so that they won’t indulge in alcoholism and drug abuse,” Kirinyaga County Sports Minister; Magdalene Nduta said.

“We want to motivate them by awarding them as the tournament goes on in different categories,” she added.

The tournament will run for the next month with the winners getting rewards and is organized under the local Football Kenya Federation (FKF) branch that will make sure association football rules are followed.

“If we work together with the County Government, we will be able to tap talent and develop them,” Kirinyaga Branch FKF chairman, Stephen Kinyua said.

The County is competing with Canada to bid for the 2017 World Scrabble Championship, and last year, Sagana River was the host of Africa Rowing and Canoeing Championship.
