KHU lays out plans on league resumption

The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) has laid out plans on league resumption when the government gives the green light for sporting action to resume in the country.

The union suspended all its leagues in March barely when the 2020 season had started following the confirmation of the first coronavirus case in the country.

The government has maintained the ban on social gatherings including sporting activities even as the infections in the country continue to soar.

However, with the ministries of Sports and Health yet to release protocols on the return of sporting activities, KHU Secretary General Wycliffe Ongori said they have options on how to restart the league.

“I can guarantee you that if we are to resume before September then there is a high chance that the league will resume, it may be a scaled down league or even a one-legged league. On the other hand, if we will be resuming after September then we are foreseeing an option of having tournaments,” said Ongori.

Similarly, Ongori revealed that they have also stepped up measures to ensure safety at the City Park stadium which hosts most of the league matches.

“We have been sanitising our stadium twice a week for the last two and half months. We have also been communicating to our clubs to ensure safety among the players where we encourage individual training so that they don’t lose touch with the sport,” he said.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed said her ministry will be releasing protocols on resumption of sports following the recommendation from the advisory committee she appointed to advise on the same.

“As soon as I receive the report, the recommendations developed by the committee will be sent to the president through the ministry of health and we hope we will soon resume some form of sport,” Amina said on Friday.
