Kimani wants end to rot as Kaya Tiwi, Shimo La Tewa banned

The Aga Khan Academy basketball head coach Jimnah Kimani has called for an end to the age cheating rot that could ravage the integrity of School Games following the bans of Kaya Tiwi and Shimo La Tewa.

The coastal giants have been disqualified from taking part at the National Secondary School Games in Embu after fielding overage players in last month’s regional championship.

Aga Khan, who won the third-place playoff to settle for the least podium, will thus represent the Coast at the competitions that will kick off next week at the Kangaru School.

“We got the call on Tuesday and the whole school was excited especially because we had not even appealed against it. The team has reported back to the academy today and training starts immediately.

“We have seen we’re in a good competitive pool and are accepting the challenge to qualify for semi-finals as group winners. Our intention will be to reach the finals and qualify automatically for the East African Games,” Kimani said.

The official expressed his joy at the verdict that struck off their age-cheating opponents as he vowed to continue his youth policy.

Kaya Tiwi fielded a player born in 1996, thus making him 22 years and ineligible to participate in the school games because the school games are for Under-19s.

On their part, Shimo La Tewa fielded two players, whose age could not be verified after they used different birth certificates to register for the games.

One player sat his KCPE exams in 2015 but got his birth certificate one year later, yet he could not prove how he was allowed to do the exams without the document and the other player could not be found in the school’s admission book and the school Shimo La Tewa said that it could have been a typing error.

The explanation was taken to have little sense by the School Games Appeals Board therefore the decision to disqualify them.
