Kioni appointed Kenyas Chef de Mission for Tokyo 2020 Olympics

National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) has appointed Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) President Waithaka Kioni as the Kenya’s Chef de Mission for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics exactly 365 days to the kick off.

The volleyball chief who doubles up as the NOCK vice-president will carry a sense of duty to atone for the country’s sporting image before and during the event following the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics scandal which painted the sports ministry negatively.

In Rio athletes complained of ill treatment with kits meant for them ending up in the hands of officials. The government subsequently launched probe with some six people among them former Sports CS Hassan Wario being arraigned. The matter is still pending in court.

In 2016, Kenya clinched six gold medals, six silver medals, and one bronze—marking the most wins of any African team at the 2016 Games as well as the best Olympic performance in Kenya’s history. Kenya came in 15th globally in medals tally, and was second only to the United States in track and field medals.

The chef de mission acts as spokesperson for Team Kenya, mentors athletes, coaches and staff, and works to create an environment conducive to optimal performance at the games which will kick off on July 24 to August 9 next year. The competition will feature 33 sports with 339 medal events with more than 11,000 athletes and officials from 206 countries expected to attend.
