Kipchoge confident rescheduled London race will take place

World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge is confident the London marathon will take place on October 4 as scheduled despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Kipchoge, the defending champion, says he has been training in isolation ahead of the 40th edition of the race which was originally scheduled for April 26 before it was pushed back due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“Preparations are going on well and I’m hoping by next Monday the Sports CS (Amina Mohamed) will allow us to go back to training camps while observing guidelines issued by the Ministry of Hhealth.

“I am looking forward to show the world that even with the Covid 19 pandemic we are able to run in a good way,” Kipchoge told NTV.

Last year, the Olympic champion Kipchoge claimed a record fourth London marathon title and is set for a mouth-watering clash with Ethiopian great Kenenisa Bekele if the rescheduled race goes ahead as planned in October.

CS Amina stated that the Kenyan government is holding talks with European Union (EU) to find they ways in which Kenyan athletes will be allowed to compete abroad.

“I have had a conversation with the European Union about allowing our athletes to travel abroad and compete in various sports events specifically we have an assurance form the EU that they will treat these cases as exceptions and they are working very hard to make sure that our sports men and women can get in to Europe or these events ,” Amina told NTV.
