Kiplimo, Chebet among big names for Cross Country Championship

Africa 5,000m champion Joseph Kiplimo and World 2,000m champion, Sandra Felis Chebet, will be among the star attractions during the 27th edition of the Discovery Kenya Cross Country Championship slated for Sunday, January 28, at the Eldoret Sports Club.

Fresh from setting a new course record in the Valencia 10 kilometers road race on January 14, slashing two minutes off Fatima Ayachi’s mark of 32:56 set during the 2012 edition, Chebet has registered impressive results in the women’s senior cross country events, since joining the senior ranks late last year.

Organisers Rosa and Associates are targeting more than 3,000 athletes to beat last year’s record of 2,600.

“Our target is to give a chance to as many athletes as possible; if we beat last year’s numbers as organizers we will be happy,” Said David Letting, the national cross-country coach.

“We have 10 different categories, from 500m for boys and irls under 7 years, up to the 10km senior men”.

The one-day event is one of the biggest sports event in the athlete rich region.

“Finishing among the top 10 at this event is almost a guarantee of making the Kenyan team, that’s the reason we attract even the elite athletes,” Letting added.

However, defending champions of senior men’s and women’s races, Geoffrey Kipsang and Priscah Jepleting are yet to confirm their participation.
