Kiprop, Naktar win Imenti South Road Race titles

Stephen Kiprop of Elgeyo Marakwet County and Miriam Naktar from Embu County are the 2017 Safaricom Imenti South 15km Road Race.

Miriam clocked 57:47:2 for her maiden victory after three previous attempts at the annual competition, upsetting three-time winner Pauline Njeru whose bid for a fourth straight title stopped at second place in 58:01:6.

Margaret Wangari from Kenya Police finished third in 58:11:2

“The race was tough especially because the heat was intense today. I had thorough training so I was prepared for the competition,” Naktar told Citizen Digital.

In men’s race, Kiprop stopped the timer in 48:12.7 with Emanuel Bor from Nandi County coming second in 48:58.9. Alexander Mutiso of Makueni completed the podium places in 59:34.

Kiprop attributed his winning performance to a year-long training as he savoured his victory.

“The race was good but it was a hard course. I’m happy I made it. I have also trained hard to get this victory,” he said.

Winners bagged cash prizes of Kshs. 100,000/= each.

Two-time Berlin Marathon winner and former world record holder Patrick Makau graced the competition now in its 11th edition.
