Kipsang eyeing third London marathon title

Two-time London Marathon winner and former world marathon record holder; Wilson Kipsang says he is targeting a to seal the World Marathon Majors flagship hat-trick when he pounds the tarmac of the British capital during Sunday’s 36th edition of the race.

Kipsang set the current course record of 2:04:29 when he claimed his second London title in 2014, having previously won it two years back in 2012 and will run knowing a public viewing of the marathon will be conducted at his Keelu Resort hotel in Iten by fellow athletes and adoring fans.

“I’m really pleased to be participating here for a fifth time. Two wins in four attempts is a good record but now it’s high time I added a third one,” Kipsang told Citizen Digital.

Kipsang finished second to Eliud Kipchoge in 2015, losing his crown in the final kilometre by five seconds but says he is now in a position to reclaim the Virgin Money London title to equal compatriot Martin Lel who won it thrice.

“I have a good record in London and I think it’s here that I have developed as a marathon runner. Last year I was only five seconds away from winning again and so I’ve been working on stronger finishes,” he added.

Kipsang will come up against world marathon record holder Dennis Kimetto, last year’s London marathon winner Kipchoge and the fourth Kenyan force in the race is New York winner, Stanley Biwott.

“I having participated in around 13 marathons, winning nine of them. I feel confident and relaxed and obviously it’s even more exciting now that a ticket to the Rio 2016 Olympics could be at stake. Winning will be a stepping closer there and I know the lads are going to give it their all,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he concluded.
