Kirigara confident they will repeat as Highland champs

Kirigara Girls are oozing with confidence they will retain their Highland Region title when action gets underway on Wednesday at Meru School as the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association KSSSA Games continue.

Sports Coordinator and basketball coach, Peter Muriungi, is upbeat his girls will replicate last year’s exhilarating performance, when they beat Mituntu girls in the finals to proceed to the nationals.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Muriungi expressed confidence in his girls whom he says have had an excellent preparation period.

“ We have been training hard, the girls are determined to continue their last year’s good run although the team is dominated by new faces. We however have given them enough exposure that we believe qualifies them to face off with any opponent,’’ said Muriungi who also coached the side in the last edition.

The school, also preparing to also shake the region in swimming, has been giving the basketball team a tougher challenge ahead of the games, lining it up against Meru Teachers Training College that also reached the nationals in the colleges competitions last year. The trainee teachers were beaten in the all four meetings.

Muriungi however foresees a tough opposition in Kangaru Girls’ whom they beat with luck in the last edition, but further challenge will come from the beaten finalists.

He recalls a mouthwatering final against the latter which they finally won to book a place in the nationals, and can only hope last year’s performance will be improved on.

Juliet Gakii, a form four student will captain the team, bragging for her “invaluable” two years experience. Her coach is banking on her experience and four more players in the last year’s team to instill confidence among the new faces in the team.

“We look forward not only to win at school level but nature girls for bigger future assignments, like our products featuring in major colleges teams including Zetech, Mount Kenya University, Meru TTC  among others, ’’ added the Chemistry and Mathematics teacher.

Kirigara are in pool B together with Isiolo Girls, Lawson Girls, Don Bosco and Wamba, while their major rivals Mituntu and Kangaru are in pool A alongside St. Angela, Bishop Kabarera and Maralal Girls.

Meanwhile, in the boys category, pool A has St. Pauls, Wamba, Matinyani, Miathene and Moi High School           Mbiruri. Meru school, Kangaru, Kitui, Baragoi and Isiolo make up pool B.
