Kirui ready to defend World Marathon title

Kenya’s marathon team to this year’s World Athletics Championship in Doha, Qatar is set for residential training starting on August 3 in Kaptagat, Uasin Gichu County.

With Athletics Kenya (AK) yet to name a coach to foresee the nine member team training, each athlete is training on their own with defending champion Geoffrey Kirui, setting his sight on defending his title.

“As the defending champion I know everyone will be coming to beat me, but as I did last time this time round am even better prepared” Kirui told Citizen Digital.

He is however not perturbed by the intense heat found in the Western Asian country.

“I have been there before, and I know the weather is very hot so am preparing well for any condition.” He added.

The gold medalist in the 10,000 meters at the 2011 African Junior Athletics Championships, believes with stiff competition expected from within, his colleges should also be sensitive of challenge from other countries.

“The team is perfect and everyone has a good time, but this is the World Championship and we need to be aware of competition from others who are also doing well out there.” He concluded

As he prepares to defend and win his second major title, Kirui will be joined by Berlin marathon runners up Amos Kipruto, Laban Korir, Paul Lonyangata and Ernest Ngeno.

The Women’s team will comprise of Ruth Chepngetich, Sally Chepyego, Visiline Jepkesho and two time champion Edna Kiplagat
