Kirwa: Expect records to fall at Kip Keino Classic

In Summary

National athletics head coach Julius Kirwa says he expects records to fall during Saturday's Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour meet at the Nyayo National Stadium.

While most of the athletes have been out of active competition due to the global outbreak of coronavirus, athletes have similarly posted fast times since the resumption of the athletics calendar in August.

National athletics head coach Julius Kirwa says he expects records to fall during Saturday’s Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour meet at the Nyayo National Stadium.

While most of the athletes have been out of active competition due to the global outbreak of coronavirus, athletes have similarly posted fast times since the resumption of the athletics calendar in August.

In fact, at Brussels Diamond League Britain’s Mo Farah and Sifan Hassan of The Netherlands lowered the long-standing one-hour world records.

Kenya’s Peres Jechirchir also smashed the women-only half marathon world record in Prague last month.

Kirwa explains that with favourable climatic conditions then fast times should be expected on Saturday.

“We are not that far since our athletes have been training alone; it is not that they haven’t been training. If the weather remains favourable then I am certain that we can witness some records here and it will be a very good thing for that to happen,” Kirwa told Citizen Digital.

With 6000 fans set to be allowed to enter the stadium, Kirwa contends that spectators play a crucial role in races.

“Having fans in the stadium is a very important aspect that will keep pushing the athletes to their limits. It is unfortunate that we are going to have few fans due to government restrictions on Covid-19 otherwise the stadium would have been full to its capacity,” said Kirwa.

The experienced tactician said he is eager to use the one-day event to assess athletes ahead of the postponed Tokyo Olympics.
