Klitschko: I fight better when the audience is against me

A ‘revenge obsessed’ Wladimir Klitschko says he gets more motivated when the audience is against him ahead of his world heavyweight title rematch against Tyson Fury next month.

With the fight taking place in Fury’s backyard in Manchester, the 40-year-old is expecting an intense atmosphere as the British crowd get behind their man.

“If I look back I fought in Germany where probably 95 per cent of 20,00 [people] in the Kolnarena was against me when I fought the German Axel Schultz for the European title.

“And I’m actually always motivated and feel better actually when the audience the arena are against me. And I’m glad this fight is happening in Manchester and it’s the backyard of Tyson Fury and I love it. I love it. I’m just looking forward to it because I always do better than when I fight at home,” the dethroned heavyweight boxing champion said.

Fury was absent at the press conference and Klitschkosaid he is willing to be patient amid doubts about whether the rematch will go ahead, with it having already been postponed due to Fury pulling out with injury.

“I’m obsessed with the goal to get my titles back, to win the fight. This feels like Deja vu in being in the press conference where David Haye didn’t show up and David had something that was really quit new to me where I had to wait for him.

“So before my match against David Haye I had to wait for him for 10 minutes to get into the ring, so I understand these situations in life. Fury’s not here right now, or maybe he’s invisible or I had him invisible. I hope so that we’re eventually going to meet in the ring,” the Ukrainian added.

“I’m not surprised if anything else is going to come. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tyson Fury showed up here to do another show singing, or being Batman or the invisible man as he is doing right now I guess.

“Or I made him invisible. So I am prepared for a new thing and I have my goal and I’m obsessed with that and this is what counts for me. Everything else is secondary.”

The Briton’s uncle and trainer, Peter Fury, feels this fight will be a lot different from the previous one and believes Klitschko will have to try something completely different from his usual defensive tactics to be victorious.
