KMSF looking into Wundanyi Rally stoning incident

Kenya Motor Sport Federation (KMSF) are looking into an incident where stoning was blamed for the retirement of local rally ace, Issa Amwari, from last weekend’s chaotic KCB Wundanyi Rally.

Amwari was on course for a second career finish in the local Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) in his new Mitsubishi EVO X when he was forced out of competition with only two stages left when he was lying sixth on the road and on course for his best result.

“KMSF are on our case to see how such incidents can be avoided in future. It was unfortunate for us to get out of the rally when it was remaining only two stages.

“If we had finished we would have attained a good position since I had given my best and I was focused to get top 10. I later reported to the organizers what had befallen us,” the Group N driver told Muuga FM.

According to the Menengai Cream-sponsored ace, some boys among the watching crowd hurled stones shattering his windscreen. KMSF rules saying any car which breaks the windscreen is not supposed to continue with the rally as a safety precaution.

“The roads were not all that good but we drove smoothly with the help of my navigator Edward Njoroge,” he added.

The Rally organised by Mombasa Motor Club has come for criticism for poor arrangements with the official results themselves taking over 24 hours to be released. The resuts from the second stage were cancelled due to an error with the timing system as Finn Tapio Laukannen grabbed victory for Subaru.

Eric Bengi and Alex Lairang’i who got home in 12th and 15th where the only drivers from the Meru region to finish with Silver Spread-sponsored Dennis Mwendwa bowing out of the competition even before the start when his vehicle seized.

Amwari who has endured a string of misfortune as well as mechanical gremlins with his Evo is hoping for better tidings at the fifth stop of the KNRC, the KCB Nanyuki Rally that will bring his devoted fans out in force.
