Kosgei nominated for Laureus award

World marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei is among the six nominees for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award.

Kosgei will battle it out for the coveted award against Naomi Osaka of Japan (Tennis), Dutch cyclist Anna Van Der Breggen and Italy’s Federica Brignone (Skiing).

Others are; French footballer Wendie Renard and Breaana Stewart of USA (Basketball).

The 27-year-old Kenyan made the shortlist for the global award after successfully defending her London Marathon title last year, where amidst the disruptions of the Covid-19 pandemic, she won the race by more than three minutes.

Kosgei is in line to be the second Kenyan to win the annual award after Vivian Cheruiyot who bagged the award in 2012.

In the men’s category, Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei will face off with Rafael Nadal (Tennis), Le Bron James (Basketball), Lewis Hamilton (Motor Racing), Armand Duplantis (Athletics) and Robert Lewandowski (Football).

At the same time, Boxgirls Kenya based in Nairobi’s Eastlands has also been shortlisted for the Laureus Sport for Good Award. The initiative started by a boxing coach, Analo Anjere supports and empowers at-risk girls in underserved slum communities in Nairobi.

They will however battle for the award alongside Fundación Colombianitos of Colombia and KICKFORMORE of Germany.

The winners of the awards will be announced in a virtual event that will be held in May.

Other categories to be awarded are; Team of the Year, Breakthrough of the Year and Comeback of the Year.
