Kosirai crowned East Africa volleyball champions

National girls champions Kosirai AIC Kosirai Girls are the new East Africa Schools’ volleyball champions after beating compatriots Soweto Academy 3-1 in a scintillating all-Kenyan final in the ongoing Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA).

The lively crowd at the Eldoret Polytechnic where the match was staged were treated to an exciting first set, which Kosirai labored to win 25-22 with their opponents from the Metropolitan ruing their poor overhead serves.

However, Soweto came back an improved side in the second set, blocking bravely and raiding their opponents to claim a 25-22 win.

Kosirai’s, Vivian Cheruto, whose fierce and accurate spikes have been instrumental for her team throughout the tournament led the side to a 25-16 demolition of Soweto.

The national queens then won the fourth set with the same margin to claim the regional title.

“The girls fought well against a really good opposition. They were poor on the serve so we exploited that in the first half and when they came back better in the second set we had to change tact. They had a strong fighting spirit so defeating them was not easy.

“For me, we had the strongest blockers in the tournament and we totally deserved to win it,” a delighted Kosirai tactician, Richard Soi told Citizen Digital.

Kenya’s Lugulu Girls finished third after beating defending champions Indangaburezi of Rwanda 3-2 (23:25,25:11,24:26,25:11,15:10).
