KPA reach playoff final as Ulinzi hold Thunder

Kenya basketball men defending champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) sailed into the playoff final after defeating last season’s first runners-up Strathmore Blades 54-50 in Game Four at the Makande Gymnasium on Sunday.

The holders survived a dramatic final quarter to seal the victory and book a finals date with the winner between Ulinzi Warriors and Thunder who are yet to finish the series in the other semi.

KPA won the opening two quarters 14-12 and 13-10 but were pegged back 14-18 in the third quarter as Blades set up a thrilling final quarter. KPA took it 13-10 to seal their marginal victory.

Despite the loss, Blades head coach Tony Ochieng thanked his players for a great display.

“We did well. Our plan worked well for us in all sectors including movement of the ball and holding. We were good on rebounds so this is encouraging,” Ochieng said.

His opposite number Sammy Kiki of KPA said he was happy with the victory but reminded his charges their title deference is not yet complete.

“The most important thing was to qualify for the finals and defend the trophy and we are going to work hard for that,” Kiki added.

Ulinzi are locked at 2-2 with Thunder after the former won Game Four to tie the series that will now be decided on Monday.
