KPA, Thunder set for heavyweight KBF clash

A mouth-watering Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) match is on the cards this weekend when Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Thunder clash at the Nyayo Gymnasium.

KPA sit third on the KBF men’s Premier League standings with three matches left before the post-season while Thunder are one place better although they have played one extra match.

Both, seeking to avoid tough opposition in the play-offs, will treat the encounter a must-win. KPA under head coach Sammy Kiki have lost four matches this season while Thunder have only lost two.

Thunder head coach Sadat Guya is only afraid of one man in KPA’s side.

“We are going to stop their new additions who played amazing against Ulinzi, we will also try to stop Aerial Okal who is the heart and soul of the team. Am confident enough we will get the results we want,” Guya said.

Guya added that they have some injuries to some of their crucial rotational players but they hope to finish in the first position as KPA are targeting second position.

On his part, the club’s captain Griffin Ligare agreed to the fact that KPA is a strong team but promised a good game.

“We are on track, polishing our offensive and defensive sets. They crash the glass well so we are going to deny them second chances as much as possible,” Ligare added.

Thunder are still assessing the condition of their guard Shem Obiero who is recovering from an injury he got in practice.

On their side, KPA’s captain who doubles up as assistant coach Samuel Ocholla says he believes it’s a pay back time having lost in the first leg at their backyard in Mombasa.

“We are going to up our game and finish in a better position hence have home-court advantage come playoff time. So far we have no injuries at all,” Ocholla said.
