KPL launch investigations over shock gun drama that marred league match

Kenyan Premier League has launched investigations into the shock gun-drama that marred Sunday’s league match between Bandari FC and home club Zoo FC at the Kericho Green Stadium.

In a statement, the league management body said that they’ll remain steadfast in ensuring safety and security of players, match officials, technical bench officials, and match-going fans during matches played in various venues across the country.

During the match, an unidentified man stormed the field of play and threatened to unleash his gun at the Bandari FC technical area, an incident that caused panic among the visiting side.

“KPL will verify the facts of the incident and apply the relevant rules firmly and fairly in order to preserve the integrity of the game. In addition to that, we will write to the Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service to look into the matter further with the aim of ensuring that this does not happen again as all licensed gun-holders are under his jurisdiction,” read the statement.

In a separate phone interview, Oguda said: “These kinds of scenes are unacceptable we have asked Bandari and Zoo Kericho to send up a report explaining what exactly transpired at the venue so that we can take the necessary measures.

He went on: “The rules are simple. The home team is responsible of ensuring there is adequate security, and the way club must also ensure they take care of their fans.”

The incident sparked outrage amongst football fans who are now calling for increased security measures during league matches.

At the same time, FKF communication director Barry Otieno has said that the federation is monitoring the progress and will await a report from the league body on the matter.

“We don’t want to speculate what happened, we remain in contact with KPL and the two teams involved to ensure such an incident doesn’t recur in future,”added Barry.
