KPL now postpones Mashemeji derby

The Kenyan Premier League has postponed the Mashemeji derby that was set for this Saturday at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega. A new date will subsequently be announced for the match.

In a one-paged statement released by the league body late on Wednesday evening after the Sports Dispute Tribunal  had ruled that they decide as to whether to proceed with the match or not, KPL argued that it had opted to postpone the game upon “consultation of its executive”.

Earlier on Wednesday, KPL and FKF bosses had locked horns at the Dispute Tribunal as each side pitched its case, with the federation advancing its prayers for the postponement of the match.

The federation, led by its chief Nick Mwendwa had wanted the match postponed to give the national football team unhindered preparations for this weekend’s twin friendly matches against Swaziland on Friday and Equatorial Guinea on Monday.

Poignantly, Gor and Leopards had seven and five players respectively in the national squad which could have compounded the matrix for the national team head coach.

KPL however countered this argument maintaining that the friendlies do not fall within the Fifa calendar hence no need for postponing the derby.

Mashemeji Derby

The latest battle front point to the bad blood between the two parties and, to a greater extent, the aloofness,  gerrymandering and shadow boxing that continue to dog Kenya’s football which has over the ages been camouflaged  by sweet tongues and sweet talk while in reality it’s a mere smokescreen.
