KPL suspends 2019/20 season over Covid-19 pandemic

The Kenyan Premier League has suspended the 2019/2020 league season owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement released Tuesday, the league managing body said that once the pandemic has been contained and the Government lifts the curfew and “other control measures put in place to curb the virus”, the league body will convene a shareholders’ meeting to decide the way forward.

“Once the pandemic has been contained and the Kenya Government confirms lifting of the curfew and other control measures put in place to curb the virus, KPL will convene a KPL shareholders meeting/Governing Council to decide the best way forward that will be good for the integrity of the competition and the clubs and after thoroughly looking at all available options and the pros and cons for each option.

As of now, there is no urgency to determine the fate of the current season as the world of football is dealing with unprecedented times as a result of the Coronavirus.

Top leagues worldwide like LaLiga, EPL, Serie A, and Bundesliga as well as FIFA, CAF, and UEFA have all suspended their activities until the COVID-19 pandemic is contained and KPL will be guided by best practices in the world of football on how to go about the remaining part of the season.”

“Regarding the KPL players and their contracts, individual clubs will discuss the situation with their players on the way forward during the interim period that the current league is suspended.

The top flight league as well as other sports activities remain suspended following a government directive issued more than three weeks ago, in measures aimed at containing the virus.

However, despite the stringent measures already put in place by the Government, the number of infected person continue to rise, with the figure rising to 172 on Tuesday.

Defending champions Gor Mahia top the standings on 54 points, seven ahead of second placed Kakamega Homeboyz after round 23 and it remains unclear if they’ll be crowned champions in the event the season is halted owing to the pandemic.
