Mieno double sinks Bandari FC in KPL Top 8

Veteran midfielder Humphrey Mieno’s double helped Tusker FC rally to beat Bandari FC 2-1 and advance into the semi-finals of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Top 8 at a soaked Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

Former Gor Mahia striker Edwin Lavatsa opened the scoring 12 minutes into the match, sneaking away from his marker to curl in a shot from outside the box.

The lead last only ten minutes as Mieno scored past keeper Wilson Obungu after some neat exchange between Timona Wanyonyi and Ronald Musana with the latter claiming the assist.

The goal catalyzed Paul Nkata’s boys, forcing Obungu to a series of spectacular saves.

The 2012 SportPesa Premier League (SPL) champions thought they had taken the lead as Musana found the back of the net from close range but his effort was disallowed for a foul in the build-up to the goal.

A brilliant pass from Cercidy Lumumba was almost turned in by Tony Ndolo but his brave diving header flew off the target.
The Dockers were punished for a sluggish start to the second half as Mieno rose highest to nod in a powerful header in the 57th minute.

Head Coach Muhiddin made a double change immediately after the setback, with his Tusker counterpart countering his move by introducing Noah Wafula for a weary-looking Wanyonyi.

Tusker custodian Martin Musalia was alert to thwart Shaban Kenga’s effort before Lavatsa came close to adding a second as his free-kick flew just inches over the bar.
Michael Khamati, whose mid-week heroics helped Tusker to a 2-2 SPL draw with Mathare United, was brought on for Musana

The Coastal based side who are now without a win in seven competitive matches were unable to find a late equalizer despite bringing in former Gor hotshot Dan Sserenkuma.

Tusker now advance to the semis, the same stage they were bundled out 4-3 on aggregate last year by defending champions K’Ogalo.
