KPL turns a deaf ear on Gors fixture glut as Tusker lurks

Gor Mahia’s cry to have their Kenyan Premier League (KPL) matches rescheduled ahead of their next week’s clash against Tunisia giants Esperance has fallen to deaf ears, with the midweek and weekend fixtures remaining as earlier planned.

Gor’s Head coach Dylan Kerr said his charges needed some break after beating Kariobangi Sharks 2-1 on Sunday, with a Tusker FC fixture set for Wednesday and another one against Bandari on Saturday.

Thus, Gor, who face Esperance on Wednesday next week, will have only three days to rest before locking horns with the former continental champions, in the CAF Champions League first leg match at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.

“My guys are tired. Being the only team that has remained in CAF competitions from Kenya, the expectation on me to win is phenomenal; everyone is expecting us to win, but three matches in seven days and we have a massive tie against Esperance coming up? Come on KPL, wake up and give us a chance,” lamented Kerr.

The congested fixtures notwithstanding, their Wednesday opponents Tusker who left for Machakos on Tuesday afternoon ready for the match, will count it a profit to collect a point from the champions.

”Gor is a good side, we all know that. Getting a win against them is possible but even a draw will be a plus for us given that we will be playing away,” veteran goalkeeper and captain Duncan Ochieng’ told Citizen Digital during their Tuesday mid-morning training session at their backyard Ruaraka.

This file photo shows Tusker FC head coach Sam Timbe gesturing during a past match. His side faces Gor Mahia on Wednesday at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos from 2:00pm. The match will be live on Viusasa.

Head coach Sam Timbe noted the brewers have been steadily improving after starting the season in the wrong footing, expecting the same trend in their K’Ogalo clash.

“We have done all the necessary in training thus we have no excuse, we must get something out of tomorrow’s match. We started badly but we are just at the beginning of the league, and we’ve improved from a loss to a draw and a win, so there is room for doing much better.

“I believe keeping the same trend we will climb to the top of the league, and challenge for the title,” charged the Ugandan.

The 11-time champions beat bottom placed Nzoia Sugar 2-1 on Saturday, their first win of the season after sinking to Chemelil Sugar 2-0 before settling for a barren draw against Posta rangers in the round two of matches.

Gor have won all the first three games against Nakumatt FC, Zoo Kericho and Kariobangi Sharks  4-0, 4-2 and 2-1 respectively.

The Tusker – Gor Mahia match will be live on Viusasa, from 2:00pm EAT (+3GMT)
