KRU boss Gangla anticipates quick return of Kenya Cup

Kenya Rugby Union chairman Oduor Gangla anticipates Kenya Cup matches to begin ‘as soon as possible’ if all the players get the Covid-19 vaccine.

The government last Friday began vaccinating athletes and officials of Kenyan teams to the Tokyo Olympics with FKF-Premier League players also benefiting.

And Gangla who wants the local rugby league to resume has challenged the Sports and Health ministries to help their players get vaccinated to aid the return of sports.

“We would like to appeal to the Ministry of Sports and health to give all athletes priority as well in terms of obtaining these vaccines because today their economic activity has stopped and it’s not their fault, so I think they need to be at the frontline. We as a union did demonstrate when we were allowed to play, that we stuck to the protocols by strictly testing our players, social distancing, and hygiene and that’s why the caseload has been very low. We are at about 2.6% and we test the players every two weeks,” said the chairman.

Gangla claimed that Sport has not been a major contributor to the spread of the virus, hence the need to vaccinate the players and staff and make sure a return to sports is implemented within the shortest time possible.

“So we believe even if the national figures of positive cases increased a bit, I don’t think the problem is in Sports. So we must find a way to ensure that sports return as soon as possible. If we can get these vaccines by end of this week, then we can work out when the leagues can resume,” added Gangla.

President Uhuru Kenyatta last month announced the suspension of Sports in a move he said was aimed at taming the rising Covid-19 cases.

But the announcement has also left thousands of stakeholders including athletes, coaches and referees jobless.
