KRU reschedules fixtures ahead of Onyango burial

The Kenya Rugby Union has rescheduled its competitions to pave way for clubs and players to pay their last respects to former KCB and Kenya Simbas fullback Tony Onyango who passed on a week ago.

The Kenya Cup, KRU Championship and Eric Shirley Shield semifinal and final fixtures have been affected by the fixture changes announced in a statement from the country’s rugby governing body.

KCB RFC have organised a fundraiser for the departed star at their Ruaraka grounds on March 13, a week before he is scheduled to be buried.

“The semifinal fixtures, originally slated for 21 March will now be played on 28 March with the finals set for 18 April. These changes have arisen following the confirmation of 20 March as the burial date for departed KCB and Kenya utility back Tony Onyango who passed away last week,” the statement on KRU’s website reads.

Enterprise and Mwamba cup fixtures will also be affected.

“These changes also affect the remaining fixtures in the Enterprise and Mwamba Cups which have also been pushed back a week with the final taking place on 25 April.”

However the KRU Nationwide National playoffs will not be affected as they are slated for the 14th March 2020 where Homeboyz RFC will battle Menengai Oilers while Resolution Impala Saracens face Stanbic Mwamba at the Impala club.

The revised schedule will be as follows:-

Kenya Cup/ESS/Championship Semifinals

28 March 2020

Enterprise Cup Semis

4 April 2020

Great Rift 10s

11-12 April 2020
