The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) is set to conduct interviews for the new Kenya Sevens head coach in the next one week.

The Director of Rugby at the KRU Thomas Odundo has told Citizen Digital they have already received 14 applications for the post from local and foreign tacticians.

Earlier, KRU had announced that the position would only be open for Kenyan coaches before relaxing that condition to allow them find ‘the most suitable’ candidate to lead the Kenyan team.

According to Odundo, KRU will shortlist six candidates who will be interviewed for the Kenya Sevens head coach slot.

KRU parted ways with Kenya Sevens Technical Director Paul Feeney on mutual consent 0n June 12, 2020 in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The New Zealander had served from September last year after replacing former coach Paul Murunga. He helped Shujaa clinch the Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens title in Johannesburg and earn qualification to the postponed Tokyo Olympic Games.

The new head coach is expected to lead Shujaa in the new season, expected to start in October with Kenya hosting the Safari Sevens International tournament.

Earlier KRU Chairman Oduor Gangla had said KRU will resume local tournaments (Kenya Cup and Championship) and international competitions after a green light from the government through the Ministry of Health.
