KSSSA: Meru School humble Wajir with a century in basketball opener

Meru School on Tuesday demolished Wajir high 102-34 in the ongoing National Secondary Schools Games at Kangaru School, announcing their quest for the boys basketball trophy after a nine-year absence at the stage.

The Eastern Region champions outran their opponents in all the four quarters scoring 28-11, 40-2, 18-12 and drew 11 all respectively, to mark a promising start in the competition eyes on the East Africa Games ticket.

The most valuable player was Meru School’s forward Deng Kuol Deng with 30 points followed closely by his captain Salem Bundi who hit 24 points while Brian Kipkorir scored 17 as the third best.

Wajir’s hit man was Mohamed Adan smashing in 20 points, followed by his captain Mansour Abdinor with three pointers to get nine points.

Speaking to Citizen Digital after the clash, Meru School head coach Paul Muli said that it was good coming back to the nationals with a boom.

“I’m happy for the boys, they played well and executed our game plan. The score is amazing, marking our return to the national games with a century after a nine years is worth celebrating,” the coach told.

Playing their second match against Agha Khan tomorrow at 3:00pm,  Muli  expects his charges to press harder on their opponents.

On his part, Wajir head coach Feisal Abdi was happy with his team’s performance despite losing heavily.

“Am happy with the boys because last year we reached at this stage but we never scored more than 20 points, so kicking off with 34 points shows we are doing better.

“This is the right attitude at the moment and our target is to get more points in our next match. At least a win will be a big boost for my boys,” offered the coach.

In the another Pool A match, Ambira defeated Agha Khan 68-57. The action continues on Wednesday at 3pm, Meru School locking horns with Agha Khan while Wajir play Ambira at the same time.

In pool B Alliance will play Laiser on Tuesday at 3.30 pm while Sigalame will battle out with Dagoretti at the same time.
