KSSSA: Upper Hill crowned national football champions

After a three-year wait, Nairobi’s Upper Hill on Saturday won the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national football champions in Boys category, in Nyeri.

Upper Hill edged out 10-man Rift Valley champions, St. Anthony 3-1 in post-match penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.

John Ondira had opened the scoring for the 2013 champions on the 33rd minute, before Moad Kazungu equalized for the Upper Hill with 14 minutes left on the clock.

And after 30 minutes of extra time, Upper hill goalkeeper Mohamed Hamdi who helped his side eliminate the Kakamega High in the semifinal, was at it again, this time saving two spot kicks from Victor Barango and Kevin Oduor. St. Anthony custodian Sheikh Alleley blasted his shot wide, with Ken Mukuria converting the only spot kick for the side.

Douglas Mokaya, James Peter and Tom Oluoch, converted for the champions while Peter Oyier penalty was saved.

“We feel so good, especially for me as the captain I feel so great this is being my final year in school and I had not played in the nationals.  It has been a long journey and for the school it is wonderful.

“Our plan was to first win the national title, then think about the East African championship. We know it is not easy but we are ready,” said Upper Hill Captain Ramadhan Abdalla.

St Anthony finished with 10 players after their scorer Moad Kazungu was shown a red card following a second yellow, with eight of the regulation period remaining.
