KSSSA: Wiyeta floor Ibinzo to lift national football trophy

Wiyeta Girls are the new Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) football champions after seeing off Ibinzo from Western 3-1 in post-match penalties, in the girls final played at the Nyeri Primary School on Saturday.

After a 1-1 draw in regulation and added time, the Rift Valley champions scored three spot kicks through captain Martha Amunyolete, Hellen Awino and Laventine Kihemo. While Mersin Atieno scored the lone penalty for the losers.

Wiyeta goalkeeper Diana Tembesi saved two spot kicks from Cynthia Shilwatso and Cynthia Matekwa with Lilian Mmboga shooting wide.

“The game was good save for few challenges, but we did our best and carried the day. Now we are going to prepare well for the East African championship.” elated Wiyeta Captain, Martha Amunyolete.

Her opposite number Vivian Makokha could not hold back her tears after failing to win the trophy she was targeting for the first time.

“We lost the first game to them by 4-2 and meeting them for the second time we had prepared well.  We played our best, but they were the better side.

“Our Goalkeeper made mistakes in the first match, and the coaches rectified that. Our defense was not good but in the semi too but played heart out in the final. Unfortunately on penalties the luck was not on our side,”  lamented the Ibinzo skipper Vivian Makhoha.

Monica Ototi had scored the opener for Wiyeta early in the second half before Lilian Mboga equalized for Ibinzo close to final the whistle.

In the third place play-off match, Kobala from Nyanza hammered Jabini from Central 3-0.
