KVF pays tribute to former volleyball chief Barnabas Bargoria

Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) has mourned former chairman Barnabas Bargoria as the administrator who propelled Kenya to the volleyball top echelons in Africa.

Bargoria who served as the federation boss from1989 to 1992, succumbed to myriad health complications over the weekend at a Nairobi hospital, according to KVF.

During his tenure, Kenya hosted the first ever joint Men and Women African Club Championships in 1991 with defunct Posta Kenya team becoming the first Kenyan women side to win the prestigious title the same year.

KVF vice-president Charles Nyaberi hailed the departed administrator as the ‘founding father’ of volleyball in the country adding that under his leadership Kenya moved swiftly on the path of progress and raised its stature at the Africa stage.

“We made a big breakthrough during his tenure especially in club level because it was under him that Posta won Africa title in 1991. Because of his leadership Kenya started to dominate the African scene and as volleyball family we’ve lost an icon who has made tremendous contribution to the development of volleyball in the country,” offered Nyaberi.

He added: “It was also under his leadership that Kenya hosted the African Club Championships (1991) and because it was very expensive to hold the event he used his good relationship with the late President Daniel Arap Moi who helped the federation to successfully host the Championship.

The volleyball administrator also served as the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) vice-president between 1989 and 1992.
