Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) has reached an agreement with Sports Kenya to host some of its league matches at Nyayo Stadium indoor gymnasium, Citizen Digital understands.

The deal is a massive shot in the arm for KVF who are planning to move their leagues from outdoors to indoor arena when the top-flight volleyball returns on January 23 after a prolonged break caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

It has been a challenge for the federation to secure an indoor arena in Nairobi with Bomas of Kenya, Africa Nazarene University (ANU) and Kasarani indoor arena-all not available. Only Mombasa’s Makande was available.

Before the 2020 season was disrupted, the federation had planned to have the league played on a home and away format in indoor arenas between October and May in conformity with the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) calendar.

However, with lack of facilities still a big challenge in Kenya the federation’s plan to have all the matches played in arenas could prove impossible.

According to the fixtures released by the federation late last year, the Men’s league has attracted 13 teams while the women’s league has eight.

Men’s volleyball top dog General Service Unit (GSU) will be eyeing their fourth consecutive KVF success and 15th in total while Kenya Prisons will be going for their third in a row in women’s category.
