Kwale reign supreme, bag women football title in KYISA Games

Kwale County football women team are the new champions of the Kenya Youth Inter-County games (KYISA) after trouncing defending champions Kajiado 1-0 in the finals on Saturday at Unoa grounds in Makueni County.

Karembo’s second half goal was enough to hand her side the KYISA maiden title, overcoming Kajiado who had otherwise dominated the tie.

With this defeat, Kajiado surrendered the title they bagged in 2014 and 2016.

The scintillating tie ended 0-0 in the first half, with the two sides wasting open chances.

Kwale’s tactician Mkasa Mboko opted for two changes in second half which bore fruits in 73rd minute after Karembo smashed in a well-calculated cross from Tabitha Mueni .

In a post-match interview with the Citizen Digital, Mboko said they deserved the win and their target is to now dominate in the coming editions.

“I am a happy man because it has been my dream to win this title since KYISA’s inception in 2014. It’s good we have won against champions Kajiado who defeated us in the last edition’s finals. “We now want to ensure we do it again next year,” said Mboko, who has guided his team to a runner- up finish twice.

His counterpart, Daniel Kyalo, noted the competitive nature of this year’s competition, promising to go back to the drawing board ahead of next year’s competition.

“I congratulate the new champions because they deserved to win. I knew they would  give us a challenge because we have faced them in two finals. Now, let’s think of next year,” Kyalo admitted defeat.

In their route to the finals, Kwale saw off Makueni 3-2 in a post- match penalty shootouts, while the immediate champions thrashed Elgeyo Marakwet 1-0 to storm to the finals.

Meanwhile, organizers were forced to suspend men football  and volleyball finals following heavy downpour, calling off the match between 2015 champions Kwale and in 20th minute.
