Kwanthaze Girls reclaim Eastern region volleyball title

Volleyball titans Kwanthanze made the first stride in their journey to the East African Secondary School Games in Uganda after edging out Kyatune Girls 3-0 in a lopsided final of the Eastern Region Term Two B Games in Machakos.

Kwanthaze, who sent shock waves when they clinched the East African title in 2015, now advance to the Nationals with a bid to reclaim the crown they relinquished last year at the back of their minds.

Last year they crashed out at the Regional level but have remarkably picked themselves up this year , easily dispatching their opponents with Kyatune the latest victims to be spiked off.

On their way to the finals, the 2015 Metropolitan champions eased past Chogoria Girls (3-0) in the quarters before driving through Nduluni Girls by a similar margin in the semis.

“After a slump in last year where we didn’t make it to the nationals,I think this time we will stun our opponents in Nyeri and I am sure my team will put a exemplary performance,” Head Coach Justin Kigwari told Citizen Digital post-match.

Kwanthanze is renowned for producing potent talents with Left attacker Pamela Masaisai who left the school last year being one of the five new players recruited by local giants Kenya Pipeline.

Also under former principal and Athletics Kenya Vice president Paul Mutwii Kwanthanze shaped world class running talent including the Bydgoszcz 2008 IAAF World Junior 3000m steeplechase champions Jonathan Ndiku and Christine Kambua Muyanga.

Elizabeth Mueni who won women 3000m steeplechase Silver at the same championship also hailed from the same school that made history by having five of its students make the nationals team for the top junior event.

Kangundo boys made it to the nationals also after eliminating Gatunga from Tharaka Nithi 3-0 sets in boys semi finals.

The Nationals will be staged at Nyeri county next month with the East African championshipsset to be staged in Uganda.
