Lack of fitness haunting Sunguti’s Nairobi County in KICOSCA

Last year’s football finalists of Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Games, Nairobi County, were forced to a barren draw by Busia County to the disappointment of head coach Maurice Sunguti in the second day of the games in Kisii on Tuesday.

Sunguti decried unfitness saying his team cannot endure speed from competitors despite the training he has exposed them to, hence the uninspiring result.

“I’m struggling to win matches because most of my players cannot withstand playing for long. Most of them are over 45 years. I’m depending on county employees only, and we cannot outsource,” said the former Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards defender.

Machakos County started the defense of their football title with a 3-0 win against Vihiga County, while Kisii registered a 5-0 victory over Kajiado.

Ogechi Ratemo, Albert Likavo, Steve Otego, Absolom Ratemo and George Omare scoring for the hosts to help them qualify  for the round of 16 after winning its two first matches.

In another match of the pool Nandi won 5-2 against Embu, who overcame Kajiado in yesterday’s opener.

In other matches Trans Nzoia won 4-1 against Senate while Bungoma defeated Nyamira 4-0,  as Kirinyaga won 2-1 against Kitui with Uasin Gishu drawing 0-0 against Siaya.

In volleyball Bungoma Women won 3-0 against Vihiga (24-7,24-13,24-5), Kitui won 3-0 against Trans Nzoia.

In Netball, defending champions, Nairobi under coach Fatuma Mahmoud beat Uasin Gishu 37-28 while Narok lost 19-32 to Kiambu in a tough encounter.

Fatuma Mahmoud vowed to employ more zeal in the remaining matches aiming to retain the title they won last year in Machakos.

“We have one more match to reach the quarter finals and we will treat each game as a final,” said Mahmoud.
