Late government intervention stops athletes from sleeping in the cold

It took a late intervention of the government to rescue African Games teams from spending Tuesday night in the cold after they were kicked out of their hotel rooms due to lack of payment of the accrued bills.

The team comprising of athletes and the women volleyball players have been residing at The Luke Hotel along the Thika road as they step up their preparations for the 12th edition of African Games to be held in Morocco from August 19 to 31.

Athletes residing at the hotel had on Sunday raised the alarms on the challenges they were subjected to due to the limited space at the hotel.

It was however until Tuesday evening that the bad got to worse when the athletes together with Malkia Strikers squad were thrown out of their hotel rooms owing to their unpaid bills.

“We were just thrown out of the hotel with our belongings as they said they were yet to be paid,” said one of the athletes who spoke to Citizen Digital.

The athletes together with their trainers were consequently left helpless as they moved out with their luggage.

It was until the ministry of sports official representing Principal Secretary Kirimi Kaberia arrived at the hotel that the athletes were allowed back into their rooms.

Prior to the incident, athletes had revealed their struggles at the residential camp as some of them did not even secure rooms at the hotel.

The players have been residing at the hotel while commuting for training at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani while Malkia Strikers have been training at the Barclays Plaza after they shifted from Kasarani to create room for the ongoing East Africa Military Games.

The athletes are also yet to pocket their allowances after joining residential on August 5.

After the trials, Athletics Kenya handed their team to the Kenya National Sports Council which is mandated to oversee preparations for the Kenyan contingent in the continental championships.

The last batch of Kenya’s contingent is expected to leave on August 23.
