Legend Kadenge grapples with huge hospital bill
The family of hospitalised football legend Joe Kadenge is grappling with a huge hospital bill accrued at the Nairobi Hospital where the 83-year-old-legend is undergoing treatment at the High Dependence Unit (HDU).
Kadenge was rushed to the hospital by his children led by son Rodgers Kadenge, after developing complications at his Nairobi residence on Wednesday night, and doctors said he was suffering from stroke that might have resulted from the sudden demise of his daughter in the US last week.
According to the family, his health deteriorated gradually after learning of Evelyn’s death and the situation got worse on Wednesday, when they decided to take him to hospital where he is still admitted.
“When we came to the hospital we presented the NHIF card and they told us it is invalid, we were told to deposit Ksh 400,000 so that mzee could be be admitted which we failed; and only managed to pay Ksh 50,000,” Rodgers Kadenge told Citizen Digital.
And after four days of treatment at the HDU, the family is now starring at astronomical bill currently at Ksh 600,000.
“When the President gave Mzee the card he said it will pay for his bills in any hospital nationally or abroad, as long as he is alive, we are fearing now because we can’t raise the funds, we want the president to intervene,” added the junior Kadenge.
Due constant illness, Kadenge’s once robust frame is now a pale shadow of the marauding former Kenyan winger who tormented defenders at will in his hey days. He suffered stroke in January 2006, and collapsed at Camp Toyoyo grounds in Jericho, Nairobi, while watching a football match on December 23.
