AFC Leopards have commenced talks with their top striker Elvis Rupia over contract extension.

Club Chairman Dan Shikanda has revealed that the former Power Dynamo and Wazito FC goal poacher is keen to stay despite many clubs monitoring him with a view of landing his signature.

“We want to make sure all our reliable players like Elvis Rupia append their signatures – to new terms we have offered so as to commit their future at AFC Leopards.

I have talked to him (Elvis Rupia) and he is positive of committing himself to our club and we want to help him by reinforcing the striking force to be more lethal,” Shikanda said.

According to the club boss, Leopards are a ‘big brand’ hence offering a huge platform for every player who dons its colours compared to Zambian clubs.

“…I think Rupia who has already tested Zambia league may not be in hurry to return to the southern African country. You play for Leopards you increase chances of landing a call-up to the national team, Harambee Stars.

“When we start a new season with a new sponsorship we are hoping for, we are going to bring in top players with an aim of strengthening the team in order to compete with top clubs in the region,” the former AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia player stated.

Leopards have about three to four players whose contracts are running down at the end of this month but Shikanda is confident that they will agree to new terms.

They include striker Vincent Oburu, Jaffery Owiti and Collins Sichenje – all first choice players and the club can ill afford to lose them.

This is however the likely scenario as finances are hard to come by, the playing unit left to fate.

Shikanda has also vowed to see to it that Leopards brings to a halt Gor Mahia’s dominance by lifting the 2020-21 league.

“We are meeting the technical bench next week to know their mind on where we need to reinforce before the new season begins.

“Next year I will have no excuse for not winning the league and it will be my second year in office as the club chairman.

“We must lift the league trophy and there is no two ways about it. AFC (Leopards) is a big club with a big brand and must be addicted to winning trophies.”
