Leopards go third after epic win at Mathare

AFC Leopards fought from 3-1 down to earn a dramatic 4-3 win as the resurgent Kenyan Premier League (KPL) giants ended Mathare United’s unbeaten start to the season.

It was the second win in as many matches for Leopards’ caretaker coach Dennis Kitambi with the result lifting them up to third on the KPL standings.

Cliff Nyakeya had put the hosts ahead in the seventh minute before Brian Marita cancelled it out 10 minutes later. Francis Omondi then restored Mathare’s lead from the spot after Isaac Oduro had been hacked inside the penalty area.

Nyakeya grabbed his brace minutes later but hardly had their celebrations died down when Duncan Otieno made it 3-2 to cap a first half filled with scintillating action.

Leopards had needed a huge second half display to overturn their fortunes and Ezekiel Odera provided the inspiration when he pulled his side level with a 60th minute strike.

The match was begging for a winner and Marvin Nabwire stepped up for Leopards with 13 minutes left on the clock.

Ingwe were reduced to ten men late on with Oduro given the marching orders for a second bookable offence but they held on to take all the three points.

At the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, Masita Masuta struck in the dying minutes as Ulinzi Stars defeated Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 to move into fourth on the log.
